It all started without a single voice on the television warning us, a silent whisper through the streets of Fairhaven. Our only warnings were hidden within the depths of the web, even then, the information was bare, mere mentions of a super-virus with no list of symptoms accompanying it. How could we have prepared? We couldn’t have.

Within weeks, the super-virus finally tore through the veil shrouding it. It made national news, and Fairhaven was placed under quarantine by the U.S Government. We watched as parking lots were converted into refugee camps, shopping centers became quarantine centers, and our neighbors houses became burnt out shells of their former selves. Nobody told us anything, just that we couldn’t leave.

We held on by a thread, biting the bullet where we could until people started vanishing from the camps, starting with the elderly, ending with children. Nobody had any real clue what was going on, families made scenes, tried to incite violence, until they vanished too. People were too afraid to act past the formation of C.E.I.T.A. We kept on eating our pills, taking our shots and watching the news for more information. All of this in the span of three days … three days, a major populace was nearly wiped to nothing, sections of the city barred off … only in three days.

By day four? All we could hear were gunshots in the distance, the news telling us the quarantine had been expanded to Peoria and Bloomington, cutting us off from South Illinois. It wasn’t long until many of us were loaded up in buses and hauled off towards the military evacuation point outside the city … but not all of us, some of us were left behind to make our own way there. We gathered up in our cars and rode off, some towards the border, and some towards the evacuation point, right up until we reached the backed up highway with cars miles down.

Welcome to New Dawn’s The Road Ahead lore. This post will serve as information for our brand-new players, as well as those that wish for a refresher. Firstly, you need to understand that the lore has been separated into two “chapters”, with it currently progressing through the second one at the time of this post going live.

The first chapter, The Road Ahead, took place in a fictional area of Illinois, and was made up of several towns: Fairhaven (Over The River custom map), Kings Mill (Valley Station), Twinsburg (Muldraugh), Hartsdale (West Point), Union Center (Rosewood), and lastly White Horse Creek (Riverside).

With the progression onto the second chapter, Crossing the Line, and the addition of an entirely new map, these areas are no longer in play. This chapter takes place within the fictional town of Port Falmouth, Illinois; a location far to the south of the Fairhaven area. A small post for information on Port Falmouth may be found here:

An overall timeline description of The Road Ahead and the story so far can be found in this post here:

    Crossing the Line:

In this chapter there are a number of things to keep in mind while creating a new character, or even while playing an existing one. This section will serve to include any notable things that your character should be aware of while surviving in Port Falmouth.

    • The “zombies” in this lore are not undead—by all appearances, they appear to be living, breathing people. It’s well known by this point though that those infected by the outbreak seem to enter into a mindless state, and endlessly search for their next meal of uninfected flesh.
    • Exposure to blood or saliva from an infected individual in exposed areas of the skin seems to lead to a near inevitable infection, and consequently the mindless state that most infected linger.
    • The city of Chicago has been firebombed extensively. Survivors actually living in this area is highly unlikely.
    • Established near the start of the outbreak, nearly the entire state of Illinois had a blockade constructed to contain the infection. As of the end of chapter one, The Road Ahead, this line has since been breached, and the infection has broken out into the rest of the nation.
    • Despite their initial attempts, FEMA doesn’t seem to have a presence any longer within the original Illinois quarantine area.
    • The CEITA organization, the group fighting for the infected to be viewed as ill individuals and not mindless threats, seems to have broken up entirely. The leadership reportedly vanished under mysterious circumstances, and any lower-level members have largely been left on their own.
In Crossing the Line, you are given the unique opportunity to apply as a member of pre-existing factions within the Port Falmouth area. These groups include the Mongols, and Stonepoint Manor.

More information on these groups can be found here:
